GAMING
Why do your eyes go red when you game?
Red, stinging eyes after a gaming night usually come from blinking less. In a 2026 study, experienced Call of Duty players blinked an average of 5.9 times a minute in intense scenes, and eye discomfort rose during the session in everyone who played. Breaks between matches do the most. The lens decides what the screen does to your evening afterwards.

Why do your eyes go red when you game?
Because you blink less, and less the more is happening on screen. Researchers at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya had 30 people play Call of Duty for 25 minutes (Clinical and Experimental Optometry 2026). The 17 experienced players blinked an average of 5.9 times a minute in intense scenes and 10.4 in calm ones. The 13 who did not play action games blinked 7.9 and 13.7 times. Eye discomfort rose during the session in both groups, but tear volume measured with Schirmer's test did not change.
For comparison, a review in Acta Ophthalmologica in 2022 cites measurements where blink rate fell from 26 a minute in conversation to 14.5 at a screen. Every blink spreads the tear film across the eye. Blink half as often and the surface has time to dry in between, and a dry eye surface is what stings, feels gritty and turns red.
Are red eyes after gaming dangerous?
Usually it is temporary irritation that settles after a night's sleep. But there are times to get it checked: if the redness lasts several days, if the eye hurts, if you become sensitive to light or see worse, or if only one eye is red. Start with an optician or contact a healthcare service.
What helps with red eyes after gaming?
Whatever gives the eye more blinks and more rest. Breaks are the only measure with support from a follow-up study: with 29 computer users, dry eye symptoms went down over two weeks of reminders to look away every twenty minutes, and the improvement disappeared when the reminders stopped (Talens-Estarelles et al. 2022). The rest is simple practice.
- Look at something far away for twenty seconds between matches or on loading screens.
- Blink deliberately a few times when an intense sequence is over.
- Do not play in a pitch-black room with only the screen on. Keep a lamp on behind the screen.
- Do not point a fan or air conditioning at your face.
- If you wear contact lenses and your eyes go red every time, talk to your optician about lens type and wearing time.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stinging and grittiness after long sessions | Fewer blinks, dry eye surface | Breaks between matches, blink deliberately |
| Tired eyes after late nights | Long screen time, late | Shorter sessions, a light on in the room |
| One red, painful eye | A cause other than the screen | Optician or healthcare service |
| Hard to fall asleep after playing | Screen light in the evening | Orange lens while you play, red when you stop |
Do blue light glasses help with red eyes?
No, not with the redness. No lens changes how often you blink, and Cochrane found in 2023 that blue-light filtering lenses probably make no difference to eye strain in the short term. We do not sell LOWLIGHT as a remedy for red eyes.
What the lens does is something else, and you notice it after you log off. Screens emit most strongly in blue, and blue light in the evening suppresses melatonin. In a Harvard study, twelve people read on a lit screen for four hours before bed for five evenings: melatonin was 55 percent lower than with a printed book, it started an hour and a half later, and they took ten minutes longer to fall asleep (Chang et al., PNAS 2015). The orange lens filters 98 % of blue light and the red 99 % between 400–550 nm.
What does a late gaming night look like with LOWLIGHT?
- Last matches: orange lens. Colours turn warmer but the game stays readable.
- When you log off: red lens for the phone and the series in bed, 99 % between 400–550 nm.
- Take breaks between matches and look away. That does more for your eyes than any lens.

Frequently asked questions
Why do my eyes go red when I game?
Because you blink less. Experienced Call of Duty players blinked an average of 5.9 times a minute in intense scenes in a 2026 study. With fewer blinks the eye surface dries, and a dry eye surface stings and turns red.
How do I avoid red eyes after gaming?
Take breaks between matches and look at something far away, blink deliberately after intense sequences, keep a lamp on in the room and do not point the fan at your face. If redness lasts several days, see an optician or doctor.
Do blue light glasses help with red eyes?
No. No lens changes how often you blink, and Cochrane found in 2023 that blue-light filtering lenses probably do not affect eye strain in the short term. The lens changes which light reaches your eye in the evening, not the redness.
Is it dangerous to get red eyes from gaming?
Usually it is temporary irritation. Get help if it hurts, if you become sensitive to light or see worse, if only one eye is red, or if the redness does not clear within a few days.
Which lens should I game with in the evening?
The orange lens for the last matches, it filters 98 % of blue light. The red lens when you log off and carry on with your phone, it filters 99 % between 400–550 nm.
